About

A self-proclaimed nature enthusiast, Hwee Chieh had her fair share of scenic views throughout her life. She is always drawn to the tranquility of nature, the warmth of the sun and the serenity of its quietness. Time slows when she is in nature, free from social pressure, expectations and judgement, nature has always been her solace.

The photo reference for this piece, however, was taken one month after her father’s passing, at point in time characterised by tears and pain. Nonetheless, to her it represented hope. From her perspective, the river is akin to a path, a path that leads to the warm sun. Amidst this difficult period this piece reminded her that a bright future awaits, a future her father would have wanted for her. To her this was the glimmer of hope that she needed, the spark that triggered a conscious change in mindset and an impetus to break out of a negative spiral.

Where nature is, memories of her father follow. Despite the pain of knowing that her father would never get to experience the beauty of nature again, Hwee Chieh refuses to ruminate. This piece represents hope, a stubborn belief that there is a rainbow after the rain, and that there’s meaning amidst suffering.
